| There are twelve Grammar Schools in Essex, including those in Colchester and Chelmsford, which select their children from Year 6 based on highly competitive tests in English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning. Tests are held in late November each year, usually at the Grammar School you have potentially chosen for your child.
Independent Senior Schools also hold entrance tests in Year 6, more usually after Christmas. These tests are similar in content to the Grammar entrance tests but additionally usually include a test of creative writing.
11+ Preparation
Most children require focused, rigorous and competitive preparation which will ensure that they perform to their maximum potential on the day of the tests.
Being an ex-Grammar School teacher, I offer expert and specialist preparation classes, in small groups on Saturday mornings or after school. Exclusive to my clients, your child will also have two opportunities to sit full mock tests in July (year 5) and October (year 6). Marked papers, together with a short report highlighting strengths, issues and targets for improvement will be sent home to you, usually within 5 working days. I also offer after school, 1:1 booster sessions during the preparation programme, should the need arise.
Results
I am proud to say that over the last 10 years, 129 children prepared by me have gained Grammar School places. From 2009 to 2011, my average pass rate for girls was 95% and for boys, 86%. (calculated from children who scored 80% or better in mock tests). Many were also offered Independent Senior School places, some with substantial scholarships.
